What makes it special

5 Ultimate Stars: The Ultimate

Master restaurateur Riyaaz Amlani is no stranger to openings. He opens new restaurants every month.

But even Amlani accepts that Banng posed a special challenge. No authentic Thai restaurant has ever done well in Delhi/NCR. And yet Amlani went for broke, choosing Gurgaon’s most expensive location at Horizon Centre and aligning with Garima Arora, one of only three Indian chefs to run a restaurant that has two Michelin stars: Bangkok’s Gaa.

Garima worked on the menu with Manav Khanna one of her longest-serving chefs who understood both, Garima’s philosophy of food and the nuances of Thai cuisine having lived and cooked in Bangkok for years.

The collaboration has resulted in a triumph that is unprecedented. Banng serves the best modern Thai food that has ever been served in India, authentic, daring and innovative. It makes no compromises and takes no prisoners. And yet it has been a spectacular success, changing the paradigm for East Asian food in India.

Its success demonstrates that India is now ready for restaurants that keep it real and do not underestimate the taste of the public.

It took one master restaurateur and two talented chefs to teach us that valuable lesson.”
