The name may seem like a tongue-twister but Oggaraneda Aritha Pundi is one of Mangalore’s most famous, delicious snack.
Made from steamed rice flour, the small, spherical-shaped dumplings are tempered with coconut, cumin, mustard seeds and curry leaves. Though the dish is reminiscent of a podi idli, it lacks the spongy texture of the idli.
In 2012, chef Naren Thimmaiah of Karavalli, the legendary restaurant at The Gateway Hotel, Bengaluru, put it on the menu. He decided that he would refine the dish, without sacrificing its flavours and character. Karavalli has a long list of favourites, but the Oggaraneda Aritha Pundi has become one of its signature dishes.
